Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Todd Young (R-IN) introduced legislation to help working families build emergency savings through the workplace. The Strengthening Financial Security Through Short-Term Savings Plans Act of 2018
, or S. 3218, will allow employers to offer emergency savings plans to their workers in the form of a rainy day savings account. Over half of Americans save for retirement through an employer-sponsored retirement plan; however, workers still need a way to save not just for retirement, but also for emergencies. These plans will support workers in building up short-term savings through automatic contributions, making it easier for working families to deal with an unexpected financial emergency.
